The Opportunity Project, initiated by the US Census Bureau, transforms federal open data from the 2020 Census into practical solutions. As a part of the design team at the University of Notre Dame, our challenge focused on historically undercounted communities, aiming to share census data in ways that resonate with the public. Research revealed that these communities lacked trust in government organizations, leading to census participation reluctance and inaccurate data representation. The project, guided by community-activated design principles, birthed Co.alesce—a platform uniting designers, NGOs, data organizations, and communities. Co.alesce integrates data tools, social media, and community-activated design to empower marginalized individuals to share their stories authentically. This initiative prevents their challenges from being dehumanized into mere statistics. The term "coalesce" encapsulates the essence of diverse experiences merging into a unified whole. Our research findings and platform proposal were presented to the US Census Bureau, the Opportunity Project team, and participating universities.
